transaction. The transaction may have taken place in any country in the
world.
Foreign Bribery is a Crime
Bribery of a foreign public official has been a criminal offence in Germany since 15 February 1999. Bribery that occurred prior to this date may also be a criminal offence if any part of the offence took place in Germany. Reporting
In Germany, there is no central (federal) authority to which foreign bribery allegations can be reported. Instead, reports should be made to prosecutors in the Region (Laender) or District where the company or individual involved in the alleged foreign bribery is based. Within a Laender, a report made to the wrong prosecutor is likely to be passed on to the correct office. Anonymous reporting is permitted. The region of Niedersachsen has established an anonymous internet portal hotline through which it is possible both to submit reports of foreign bribey and receive questions from prosecutors, without breaking anonymity. Verbal and written reports can be accepted in German (official language) and in English. Supporting evidence can be translated. To call Germany from another country, use the international access code +49. It is also possible to report information regarding suspected incidents of foreign bribery to the German embassy in the country where the bribery is alleged to have occurred.
