Use the contacts on this page to report any suspicions or evidence of an Irish registered company or national being involved in the bribery of a foreign public official in an international business transaction. The transaction may have taken place in any country in the world.
Foreign Bribery is a Crime
Bribery of a foreign public official has been a criminal offence in Ireland since 26 November 2001. Bribery that occurred prior to this date may also be a criminal offence if any part of the offence took place in Ireland. Further information on the foreign bribery offence is available from Tackling Bribery and Corruption.
Implementing Legislation

Reporting
The Irish Government advises a person who has either a suspicion or documentary proof of corrupt practices involving an Irish company or national to report the matter to the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation (GBFI) in writing by post. It should be addressed to the Superintendent. Anonymous reporting is permitted. Verbal and written reports can be accepted in English and Gaelic (official languages). Further information on reporting foreign bribery is available from Tackling Bribery and Corruption Complaints. To call Ireland from another country, use the international access code +353. It is also possible to report information regarding suspected incidents of foreign bribery to the Irish embassy in the country where the bribery is alleged to have occurred. Irish public officials are required to report evidence of foreign bribery to the Irish enforcement authorities.

Do
  • Make initial contact by telephone or in writing by post.
  • Provide documentary evidence such as witness statements or affidavits, e-mails, faxes, letters, videos, text messages or recorded conversations.

Don't
  • Make initial contact by email as it is not permitted to report a crime by email in Ireland.

Validation of Contact Point(s)

In October 2008, we range the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation (GBFI). The telephone call was made in English by an English native-speaker. The people we spoke to were clearly not aware that this was a contact point for reporting foreign bribery. We were advised that all initial contacts should be made in writing by post.
