Bribery of a foreign public official has been a criminal offence in Italy since 26 October 2000. Bribery that occurred prior to this date may also be a criminal offence if any part of the offence took place in Italy. Further information on the foreign bribery offence is available from OCSE – La corruzione nelle transazioni internazionali.

Reporting
Italy has a number of police forces, with different and overlapping jurisdictions. For the foreign bribery offence, the most important forces are the Guardia di Finanza, the Arma dei Carabinieri and the Polizia di Stato (State Police). Police forces have their own web site in which free toll numbers and hotlines are provided to the general public for reporting allegations of crimes, including foreign bribery. However, it is not clear how these telephone numbers can be used by people calling from outside Italy. Anonymous reporting is not permitted. Verbal and written reports can be accepted in Italian (official language) and in English, French and Many other languages. Supporting evidence can be translated. To call Italy from another country, use the international access code +39. It is also possible to report information regarding suspected incidents of foreign bribery to the Italian embassy in the country where the bribery is alleged to have occurred. Italian public officials are required to report suspicions of foreign bribery to the Italian enforcement authorities.
