Foreign Bribery is a Crime
Bribery of a foreign public official has been a criminal offence in Japan since 15 February 1999. Bribery that occurred prior to this date may also be a criminal offence if any part of the offence took place in Japan. Further information on the foreign bribery offence is available from Guidelines to Prevent Bribery of Foreign Public Officials (May 26, 2004, Revised January 29, 2007).

Reporting
The Japanese Government advises that suspected incidents of foreign bribery be reported to the National Police Agency or to the Supreme Prosecutor's Office. Anonymous reporting is not permitted. Verbal and written reports can be accepted in Japanese (official language). Written reports can also be accepted in English. To call Japan from another country, use the international access code +81. It is also possible to report information regarding suspected incidents of foreign bribery to the Japanese embassy in the country where the bribery is alleged to have occurred. Japanese public officials are required to report suspicions of foreign bribery to the Japanese enforcement authorities.
